Every ramble turns up a "did-you-know" eventually. This one came from an old business card, all curling ink and calligraphy: "Geo. W. Auer, Tailor, 635-637 Lorain St., Cleveland, O." The kind of ornamental print a tailor once hung his name on — and the kind of thing you only find by looking twice at what everyone else walks past.

That single letter at the end isn't a nickname or a flourish. It's a piece of the record. When the Post Office issued its first official list of state abbreviations back in 1831, Ohio was the only one handed just a single letter — "O." Printers and citizens kept writing it that way for well over a century, even after the Post Office asked everyone to spell "Ohio" back out in full in 1874 and again in 1943. The habit outlasted the instructions. It took the ZIP code in 1963 to finally retire "O." for "OH" for good.
