From Cast Iron to Canvas: Firing Up the Ohio Stove Cap

From Cast Iron to Canvas: Firing Up the Ohio Stove Cap

Here at Rambler Reserve, we spend a lot of time digging through the dusty corners of history. We're absolute suckers for forgotten typography, ghost signs, and the kind of heavy-duty industrial design that was built to outlast us all. We believe the best inspiration usually comes from the places you least expect it.

Recently, while scouring some vintage archives, we stumbled across a piece of local history that stopped us in our tracks: an old broadside advertisement for the Ohio Wrought Steel Range.

Manufactured right here in Cleveland, Ohio, by Geo. A. Tinnerman—and sold down on Woodland Ave by A.M. Morse & Co.—this stove was an absolute beast of 19th-century engineering. It was forged from steel, trimmed in iron, and built to keep a farmhouse warm through the bitterest Midwestern winters.

But it wasn't the hotplates or the flue that caught our eye. It was the badge.

Right smack in the middle of the oven door was this incredibly stylized, ornate "OHIO" lettering enclosed in a sleek, horizontal oval. The typography was perfectly balanced—rugged yet elegant, with a distinct Americana flair that you just don't see in modern graphic design. It was a piece of Rust Belt artistry that was entirely too good to leave lost to time.

So, we decided to pull it out of the archives and put it where it belongs.

Meet the Ohio Stove Cap (though around the workshop, we've been fondly referring to it as the Wrought Iron Lid and the Tinnerman Two-Tone).

We took that classic cast-iron emblem and carefully translated it into high-quality, raised embroidery on a vintage-inspired two-tone crown. It's a timeless look that feels right at home whether you're out rambling through the city streets or just grabbing a pint at the local tavern.

We didn't invent the design; we just rescued it. The Ohio Stove Cap is a wearable tribute to the craftsmen who came before us and a reminder that good design never really dies—it just changes mediums.
