Cleveland! — We’ve Been Trying to Tell You

Cleveland! — We’ve Been Trying to Tell You

Cleveland! There. We have been saying it with that much enthusiasm for years. Admittedly, the audience was usually one patient friend and whoever happened to be behind us in line.

If the name has been stuck in your head lately, welcome. We are handling the attention with our customary Midwestern restraint: mentioning it immediately, then pretending it is no big deal.

Some people hear Cleveland and prepare a joke. Others bring someone they love here and start pointing things out. We recommend the second approach. It involves better scenery, and nobody has to sit through the river joke again.

Up to the Heights

A proper hometown introduction rarely follows a sensible route. You go past the old school, double back for a particular block, and stop outside a house because apparently the porch requires a full explanation. Your passenger thought you were getting coffee. Your passenger has enrolled in a local-history elective.

Cleveland Heights rewards that sort of attention. Walk a residential stretch and look at the steps, windows, and deep porches that give each block its rhythm. It is easy to imagine an afternoon becoming an evening out there, especially once somebody introduces a second chair.

There is a particular kind of affection in wanting another person to understand where you came from. Sometimes it takes a grand gesture. Sometimes it takes a slow drive and a wildly unnecessary explanation of where you used to buy snacks. Around here, we respect both.

A Love Letter, With Parking Instructions

Of course, someone will have an opinion. About the weather. About your team. About the perfectly good cap you have worn long enough for it to develop a personality. Cleveland affection tends to survive outside commentary. We have had practice.

You do not need a unanimous verdict to love a place. You need a few corners that feel familiar, someone willing to wander with you, and a lunch spot you defend with slightly more passion than the situation warrants.

At Rambler Reserve, we put some of that affection into vintage-inspired Cleveland apparel: old lettering, local stories, and details that give another Clevelander a reason to say hello. Wearing your heart on your sleeve is fine. We also make room for it on a Cleveland! snapback or crewneck sweatshirt.

For the newest Clevelander in the family, there’s a Cleveland Script baby bodysuit.

Down the Rabbit Hole

Plan your own detour with the City of Cleveland Heights’ house-history and walking-tour resources, or follow the story behind Cleveland’s room to roam. Bring someone you like. Allow more time than you think. If Cleveland follows you home in the form of a tune you cannot shake, we will consider the afternoon a success.
